goiog to press and being published, we
dusco^ffif ed owmg to the world shortage of 3^
inch discs, and tlie fact ttie only ones being
(jfoduced these days are of v&ry dubious
quaitty, ft was going to cost us over four tmes
as nHich lo supply people with discs as we
had ortgjMly been quoted. This, lo be honest,
was SOimtfiit^ whi(^ we couklrt't afford.
SOk we had to write back to all new
S4ibscribers off efine them the chance to
cancel theer orders, And once we found out

qual:ity factor is nearly IQO per cent.
4 Keep up the good cover tapes. Have you

5 Mow that about four commercial games
will be released in a year, how about
rereviewing about three games from each
issue, starting with issue one?
6 Are there any good CPC emutators
available for the PC?
7 I was impressed with the Bizarre section
last month, but did you know that

there was a privately-owned
telephone company thai used
CPCs Co run their exchanges?
They even offered itemised phone
bills which BT couldn't do with its
technology back then.

You may or may not b« familiar with the idea of
user numbers. If not, here's a briel explanation.
Any program or document saved on a disc can
be stored' in any 'user', numbered from to 1&.
Sy default, you save in u^er number - hence
the Drive tn user S message we all know
and love. It i£ possible to save a file In another
user mjmber, though, and also to move a file
from one use-r to another. The first you do
using the lUSIR command (eg, 1USER,3)-
and the second usitiR IKEHWE (for example,
IREHflME/.SrPRM.RftM'/^giPHOGRflH" moves the file
PHOGRflW Ifom user 5 to usfif 2}.
AH well ami good< t>ut wtiaf s the relevance to your problem? Quite a
lot, really, WT>en you 'delete' a file from a disc, ail the computef does is
move It to user area 22^, which is not usually pubKcly accessible. Files m
area 229 are ignored, and often written ouer, wtien the CPC is looking

file will be connpletety wiped out.

disc drive to get it irtto the PC in the first place -
and you don't make it clear whether you have a
disc dnve at all.
The best solution for backing up your tape
games is to bbiy a S.Snnch drive, and either a
Multiface or a softwaire back-up utility (such as

can be LISTed and BUH as any other. The John
Morrlfon (that's John, not Jim| ROM- blowing
software contains a program to do tho above
for you but this is, I'm afraid, the software which
takes 40 minutes to do its stuff,

CPC 5 Cfash far more often when you're
working in Machine Code rather tttan m BASIC
(or at least, that's what I find, but tfien again

assembler which you can access instantly will
save you an awtui lot of time loading from disc.

There are three
specrftc t^pes of
aunching programs: ones
that compact the contents of a disc, ones
that compact text and ones that
concentrate purefy on graphics, like the one
we'll be bokmg at in this feature.
Although I tie different sorts might all sound
very srmilar, believe me there is a worW of
difference. First, text compaction is relatively
easy, as there are onfy 26 letters m line
alphabet and about 20 symbols you can use.
Disc compaction farchiving) is a lot nwre tnchy,
and generally has lots of clever atgorittims to
squeeze both graphics, code and text into the
smallest space possible. It also takes a
relatively long while to decompact ar^ything, so
it would be pretty useless for use m the middle
of a gan^e. Here however we are going lo deal
wilh graphics screens only.
Coming fa the crunch
]he first [jroblem witM com.pacling a sCJ'een is
that each byte ol a screen of graphics could be
represertted by a whole byte of information, le,
the first byte m ttie top left of the screen could
be assigned any number between atxj 255. But
as 0-255 bytes each require eight whole bits liiis
is pretty wasieful,
Our routine works by crunching all Ifie similar
data together - that is if there is a group ol 1
bytes all wttti the value (le, all the same colour)
then it will crunch this down tnto just three bytes.
This means that large areas of similar solid
colour will be crunched into a very small area.

aliernate pixel is a drfferent colour there wdl be

Or not. There is partial solution to this problem
however, and that is by definrng a byte which will
mean the iwxt byte is crunched. The first thmg
ttie compacting program has to do. then, is to
find a byte which (S not used in the screen (sm
Figure l on the listing).
So the first thmg the foiitme does 15 search
through each location on screen; it uses a £56
bytes table, each byte of which is fiJIect with a
one if that ^alue is found on screen. When it has
finished doing Ihi^, rt sorts through the 256 byte
table to find a number that wasn't used. Tins
number wiJI be placed m locatu^n WM.

been crunched when we come to decompact
the screen. Next we have to sort through a

done (see Figure 2 on the itsting- GET

then the crunch byte, the number of copies and

Resuming normal service
Now we move on lo the decompaction, which is
just a reversed version of the compaction
process. The first byte we find )s the CRUNCH
number, which is stored as the first byte of the
compacted screen. Now we foop tlirough the
screen taking a byte from DE (the compacted
screen) and putting it mto HL (actual screen).
This occurs until the routine meets a crunch
byte; the fif st byte of which tells the routine how
many bytes have been compacted, while the
second tell it the value of the byte to paste onto
the screen. That value is then copied the
required number of times onto the screen (see
Figure A on the fishrig).

ft. Unfortunately at the expense of otJiers,
Vdu see there is a great deal of r>ame<alling,
directed primarily at a few Irish members of the
CPC scene. European sceners and fanzmes also
get the puerile slagging-otf treatrrenl. These kind
of chiidish antics are pretty pdnttess at the best
of times^ end the last thing the CPC scene needs
at the moment.

latest versions of this utility can even cope wtth
sych things as overscan and rasters. "Pie odd
program still causes it problems, though. It
doesn t like FretJi^tofik 2 mtxh ia instance.
The program works by taKjng a copy of your
CPCs ROM and creating 180k "images" of your
CPC discs on your PC hard drive. For all this, you
ijo. of course, have to have the same stze htgh-
capacity drive on tcth your CPC and PC. A
program for copying your CPC s ROM is included
with the package and any otfier ROPj^S that you
may have on the bach of your CPC can ato be
copied over. Like the discs, these ROMS become
images' on your hard dnve which can be
selected wherjever you want ihem.
All remaining bugs that prevent programs
such a^ Prehistwik 2 from running shouJd have
t>een eliminateti by the time you read this. The
latest word is that Marcos got a perfect versfon
up arid running on a Power PC.
If the final program is as perfect
